STOP THE TRAFFIK

Vineyard Records UK is a member of the STOP THE TRAFFIK coalition to protest against and stop the illegal trade of modern day slaves by:

* Exposing people trafficking
* Leading governments to action
* Unlocking freedom

STOP THE TRAFFIK, is a global coalition of organisations working together to fight against people trafficking; by raising awareness on a subject that is little known or understood STOP THE TRAFFIK will call for change and freedom.  There are currently over 300 member organisations, including businesses, faith groups, community groups and charities.  We aim to grow and build the coalition over the next year.  The four key areas that STOP THE TRAFFIK is focused on, are; advocacy, education, fundraising and freedom day.

Through advocacy and education, STOP THE TRAFFIK will demonstrate to the public ways in which they can get involved and help change peoples futures.  At the heart of the campaign is the Global Declaration Card, thousands of cards signed worldwide will be delivered to the United Nations; these aim to pressurise the U.N and individual governments to bring about a change in legislation and policies, resulting in protection from people trafficking.

The scale of human trafficking

Men, women and children are trafficked within their own countries and across international borders. Trafficking affects every continent and most countries.

Due to the hidden and illegal nature of human trafficking, gathering statistics on the scale of the problem is a complex and difficult task.  There are no reliable national or international estimates as to the extent of trafficking.  Figures are usually counted in the countries that people are trafficked into and often fail to include those who are trafficked within their own national borders.  The following statistics may represent an underestimation of trafficking, but are the most credible and frequently quoted.

* At least 12.3 million people are victims of forced labour worldwide.  Of these 2.4 million are as a result of human trafficking. A global alliance against forced labor, International Labour Organisation, 2005

* 600,000-800,000 men, women and children trafficked across international borders each year. Approximately 80 per cent are women and girls. Up to 50% are minors. US Department of State Trafficking in Persons Report 2005

* An estimated 1.2 million children trafficked each year. UNICEF UK Child Trafficking Information sheet, January 2003

* The majority of trafficked victims arguably come from the poorest countries and poorest strata of the national population. A global alliance against forced labor, International Labour Organisation, 2005

* Trafficking is the fastest growing means by which people are caught in the trap of slavery. Anti-Slavery

* Human trafficking is the third largest source of income for organised crime, exceeded only by arms and drugs trafficking. UN office on drugs and crime

* It is the fastest growing form of international crime, already generating 7 billion dollars per year in criminal proceeds. There are even reports that some trafficking groups are switching their cargo from drugs to human beings, in a search of high profits at lower risk.  UN office on drugs and crime

* People are trafficked into prostitution, begging, forced labour, military service, domestic service, forced illegal adoption, forced marriage etc.

Vineyard Records UK is working directly with orphanages to protect the vulnerable.

In addition to the portion of our profits each year that are given away to mission initiatives, VRUK is part of the Ukraine Mission Partnership. Directly involved in helping to fund, resource and educate children and young people in orphanages in the Ukraine.

Ukraine is one of the primary hunting grounds of women and children to be sold into the sex slave industry.  Factors contributing to this include the fact that once children leave the orphanages at the age of 16 they are turned out onto the streets with little or no education. This leaves them very vulnerable to being enticed into the sex slave industry, often without any awareness of what they’re becoming involved with.

The work that VRUK is helping to fund and resource is helping to educate the children so that they can go onto further education when they leave the orphanages.  It is also bringing awareness of the dangers awaiting the children once they leave the protection of the orphanages.
